SEPTEMBER
11, 2001
Peace Missions created and coordinated the Air Tragedy website
as a global emergency resource. The resource was visited by more
than 1 million viewers immediately after the air tragedy of September
11, 2001. The online resource was among the first resources available
to individuals, families, communities, businesses, and the media,
providing resources, information and assistance within hours of
the events of September 11. The website now serves as an important
historical site and resource, and is included among the archived
documents commissioned by the Library of Congress to preserve
digital materials covering the events of September 11. The site
now links to the Avalon Project at Yale University.
OCTOBER
2003 CALIFORNIA FIRES
In mid October 2003, Southern California and Mexico experienced
the worst fires in nearly a century with nearly 1 million acres
burned, over 3,000 homes destroyed, and over a dozen lives lost
due to simultaneous and converging fires. The scope of the October
2003 fires reached from Mexico to north of Los Angeles. The Red
Cross established assistance through 16 networked centers in Southern
California.
Saving Lives
& Property. Peace Missions assisted homeowners and communities
through onsite volunteer assistance, in preparing and protecting
homes and housing areas. Onsite volunteers also assisted homeowners
in evacuation prior to arrival of spreading fires.
The United
States Forest Service manages 20 million acres of national forest
land and assists the state and private forest land owners in California.
